Welcome to the wiki!
DK Wiki:About
Donkey Kong Wiki is a brand new wiki created by Gstar on May 7, 2025. It is actually a third shot at an independently hosted wiki covering Donkey Kong and its constituent franchises, including Banjo-Kazooie, Conker, the spinoff Mario franchise, and secondary spinoffs Yoshi and Wario.
A day after the site was founded, on May 8, 2025, the Donkey Kong Wiki was linked to from the front page of the Zelda Wiki on Fandom, as an effort increase the availability of content utilizing the GNU Free Documentation License.
Unlike the similar Mario Compendium, there is no full coverage of The Legend of Zelda nor Super Smash Bros., since they are not constituents to Donkey Kong to the same extent as Mario, but rather the "complete Donkey Kong franchise."
History
There have been numerous complications throughout history involving the Donkey Kong franchise having its own wiki and outright debates, not only since Mario (or "Super Mario") is widely perceived as the flagship of Nintendo and parent franchise of Donkey Kong, but also its relation to Banjo-Kazooie and Conker franchises because of Banjo's and Conker's honorary debuts in Diddy Kong Racing.
The first wiki about Donkey Kong was created in late 2006 and was titled DKWiki (without a space). It was a side-project of the Super Mario Wiki that sought to split off the Donkey Kong coverage on to a separate wiki. Incidentally, the wiki used dkwiki.org, the very domain proudly used by this very wiki! Sadly, at around January 2007, community pressure was high enough that the DKWiki re-merged back into the Super Mario Wiki.[1]
Super Mario Wiki had a similar side-project about a month later named RareWiki (also without a space), which was created on Fandom (then known as "Wikia") as a way to split excessive Banjo-Kazooie and Conker coverage from the Super Mario Wiki.[2] It was founded on February 26, 2007.[3] From the beginning, the RareWiki had lenience toward Donkey Kong coverage, even though the content had re-merged into the Super Mario Wiki.
RareWiki was not the first wiki of its type, either. On February 19, 2006, fansite The Rare Witch Project founded the RWP Wiki,[4] which had more or less the same scope as RareWiki.
The fansite DK Vine created their own wiki titled the DKU Wiki some time in 2007. In their words, the site was an "ongoing project to document the interconnected video game universe of the Donkey Kong Country series and its various spin-offs." It was more explicitly crossover-oriented than the DKWiki and the Super Mario Wiki and had a prioritized focus on lore involving Donkey Kong.
On May 25, 2008, Fandom (a.k.a. Wikia) received their first wiki about Donkey Kong, titled Donkey Kong Wiki, which was founded by Wiki443556. It is not to be confused with this wiki! For its first two years, the wiki consisted of largely Donkey Kong articles copied from the Super Mario Wiki,[5] though a proper community that sought to make the content original began to form in 2010. That same year, Donkey Kong Wiki was one of the wikis to fork off of Fandom, in protest of the Oasis wiki skin implemented by Fandom in late 2010.
History with the early DKWiki would repeat in 2018, when a consensus on a forum page determined that the Donkey Kong Wiki be merged back into the Super Mario Wiki.[6] One of the users (who happens to be the founder of this wiki!) was reluctant to assist since he loved the distinct identity that the Donkey Kong Wiki had, let alone the Donkey Kong franchise, but he did not want any content to be lost in the process. By late 2019, the merge had completed and concluded with the article Beaver Bother as "the best for last," poking fun at the infamous nature behind the minigame.
For the first half of the 2020s, there has not been any independently established Donkey Kong wiki. Gstar actually did create a wiki on Miraheze titled DKpedia on July 6, 2022 that had a similar scope to this wiki, though it utilized the CC-BY-SA content license, whilst this wiki uses the GNU Free Documentation License. The wiki was not merged into the similar Mariopedia hosted on Miraheze as well, but Gstar rather closed the wiki in 2023 since he feared a community taking over a wiki he founded, especially one over Donkey Kong and the unlucky fate it had on several earlier wikis.
Trivia
- The creation of RareWiki on Fandom predated not only the Donkey Kong Wiki, but also the creation of the Mario Wiki on Fandom by a few months, since it was not until July 15, 2007 when the Mario Wiki was created on Fandom.
